DAYLIGHT
By Michael

1
It was a normal day for Tim. Tim lived in Edina. That night, His football team, the Edina Hornets were facing the Minnetonka Skippers in the state championship. It was a night game. The drive to the Metro Dome was about 15 minutes. It was huge.

The first play of the game the Skippers returned the kick for a touchdown. The next kick-off Edina returned it. The Edina returner got tackled so hard his helmet flew off.
“I don’t think so,” the defender growled.
At half time it was 13-3, Skippers.

The hornets got it back to 13-10. There was 0:04 seconds left. The quarterback handed the ball to Tim McCrew. 5 yards until the touchdown with four seconds left felt like 50 yards. He spun of a tackle…dove, waited for the call…TOUCHDOWN!!! The huge Metro Dome was teeming with cheering fans.
“All hail number 14” and “Go Hornets!” They cheered!

2
After high school, Tim went to the University of Nebraska. The campus was huge and teeming with people. Tim felt so good. He made the football team but Tim McCrew did not start. He was so furious!!
He thought he could make a name for himself in college football. His roommate Sam was a Left Tackle. He was big and nice. He started. Tim and Sam became good friends, and Sam knew how much Tim wanted to start.
Sam helped Tim get better and Tim started training harder. He used a lot of his free time lifting weights and getting better. He wanted to start and he wanted to play.

3
The first practice that season at Nebraska Tim thought he played well but the coach still knew he wasn’t good enough. He worked and trained hard but to the coach it wasn’t enough. Next thing Tim knew the first game of the season was the next day. “I hope you have a good game” Tim said mopily to Sam as they walked backed to the dorm room.
“Me to” Sam said. “Just wait Tim, someday I’ll be blocking for you while you run for daylight” When they got to there dorms they went to sleep.

4
The first game Tim did not touch the ball. He felt sulky and mad. He was also benched for the second game…and the third…and the fourth…fifth…sixth…seventh…eighth…ninth…tenth…eleventh…and the twelfth game. His whole freshman season at Nebraska was over and he didn’t play once.
“Should I quit football?” Tim said to Sam when they were studying.
“Nah, someday I’ll block for you and you’ll run for daylight just like I said.”

5

The first practice of the off-season at Nebraska Tim played better than ever. All the training had paid off. He was beastly in the drills and was unbelievable in the scrimmage. By the end of practice he was so tired he wanted to just drift off to sleep but he had studying to do.

The next day he got a call from his coach. He went to his coach’s office. He sat down in the empty chair by his desk.
“You played really well at practice, I thought you should get some more playing time” Coach Sampson said.
“Thanks” Tim said excitedly.
“You’re not going to start but we’ll sub you in sometimes.” said coach.
“That’s fine” said Tim
“Unless…” coach said “…unless you get a lot better.”
“That’s great!” Tim said and he left for his classes.

6

The first game was a home game at Nebraska. Tim got the ball three times. One of them was a 30 yard touchdown. One was a 5 yard gain and one was a -4 yard run. There team one 10-7.

In practice he played well except in game two he did not get the ball. The practice after game two he played as good as he did in the off-season. He got another call. He was going to play more often! By the tenth game he had fourteen touchdowns and was a Heisman contender.

In the eleventh game he had started for five games. IN the eleventh game he played his best college game ever so far. He scored four touchdowns and racked up 184 yards!! He had sweat dripping down his face in the first five minutes. They won 35-14! There record was now 9-2. They were ranked number 4 in the country.

7
Game twelve was a home game against number 3 in the country. Tim got the first handoff, he ran up the middle for 4 yards. He got the ball 21 times for 123 yards. After that game the Big Twelve Championship was next it was number 3 Nebraska against Number 2 Texas. Tim played really well. He got 142 yards and 4 touchdowns. One of his touchdowns came with 0:10 seconds left. They won 21-17! They were number 2 in the country and were going to play in the national championship. Tim was a Heisman contender so he was at the Heisman ceremony. The voting was close but time didn’t win. Tim was happy for the winner. Tim flew back to Nebraska for practice before the big game.

8
Tim and his team flew to Florida, the sunshine state because that’s where the national championship was being held. Tim had practiced hard and was really pumped. Tim and his team were having fun and practicing hard. Before they knew it, it was the day of the big game. The Nebraska Cornhuskers were playing the number 1 USC Trojans. The teams quickly went to the middle of the field for the coin toss. The Cornhuskers were going to receive the kick. They had a good return. The crowd was blaring. The first play was a running play to Tim. Tim got the handoff, Sam blocked and Tim ran for daylight just like Sam had said.
