The Hornets
by Tom
It all started with a spud of an idea. This one man kept a dream that he will make a high school and name it Edina High School and the teams mascot will be a hornet. A year and a half later, the school was built and swarming with students. They even had a football and hockey team. Two years later, the Edina Hornets shot up to third place ranking.
On July 10th, 1999, the hornets had a very nasty game vs. Eden Prairie. Edina was trailing 4 to 1. John Jetter had the puck; he skated around five E.P. players. When he was about to shoot, he was tripped! He slammed to the ground losing one of his teeth. He mouth was gushing out blood. Everyone gasped. The guys skated up to that tripped John and they shoved him and more E.P. players came to join him. Then the whole hornets’ bench came onto the ice. John was just sitting there. No one noticed him during the fight except for the crowd. Another thing no one noticed is that John’s helmet was cracked. Just what John was afraid of, ending his hockey career.
45 minutes later, the fight was over and John was being carried across the ice on a stretcher. John’s eyes were shut. The crowd was hush. John had a very bad concussion. After 13 hours, John opened his eyes. John was in serious pain. He had chipped his tooth, his brain was swollen, he couldn’t talk and he had to be on crutches.
2 months later his condition just got worse no one knew what was going on. The next day John died he had over 30,148 people cam to his grave in 5 hours the hornets didn’t play a single game for 58 days…
Then there was Anders Lee. He played all sports. The next time Edina played E.P. in the first period the score was 5 to nothing E.P. was winning then Anders Lee showed up on the ice, then he skated up to the guy who had the puck slam. He checked a guy so hard that the boards were shaking like crazy. Anders had the puck. He was skating down. “He shoots…he scores!” The whistle blew. They dropped the puck and slapshot it away. Alex now had the puck. He shot and scored. The whistle blew again! E.P. pulled their goaly. Anders was back on the ice. Alex passed it to Anders. Anders shoots and scores and the buzzer rang.
In the second period, the score was 7 to 5. Edina was winning! The buzzer rang again and the puck dropped. It was amazing! Jack scored so it was 8 to 5.Then Anders scored, then Alex scored, it was 10 to 5. The hornets had scored three goals in four minutes, 15 seconds.
Then it was 6 to10. With one more period left, the crowd was going wild! Anders had the puck, he back handed it to Alex who shot. He scored! The ref dropped the puck 25 seconds later. Anders scored! The big picture of John was above the Hornet’s goal. All the players’ jerseys had his number on the upper left hand corner of their jerseys.
At the end of the game, the score was 20 to 7. “What was it like to get 10 goals in a game?” the announcer said as he walked up to Anders. “Well I didn’t just do it for the team. I did it for John. He was my inspiration to play hockey and baseball and football. So thank you for everything you have done for me, John.”
